Learning to play the piano is more than pressing keys to play a song, it's about making music.
Pianists have an orchestra at their fingertips. Study in all areas of music is important for mastery and appreciation. Studying this instrument can teach students all the aspects of music, poise under pressure, preparation, analytical and creative thinking and so much more and it all translates to every aspect of their lives. An education with this amazing instrument benefits student's, no matter what their long term goals may be. Though the amount of attention paid to each area can be individualized, students will be given the opportunity to explore all aspects of this art form, which includes: technique, theory, study of all eras and styles of music, general musicianship skills and artistry, history and memorized performance. Students are also encouraged to explore their skills in composition, improvisation and playing by ear.
While teaching will be tailored to each individual student, all students are expected to participate in annual recitals and studio programs and when ready to stretch their skills through festival, evaluations, or competitions. All skill and talent levels are accepted into the studio through audition, interview or referral. It does not matter how quickly or how slowly a student progresses so long as the student shows dedication and a desire to learn.
One of my chief goals is not only to foster a love of beautiful music within my students and a joy in the process of learning, but to teach them autonomy in practice, performance skills and goal development. Not only does this provide them with skills that are theirs for life, but rewards them with confidence and ownership of their work.
